Pittsburgh Steelers star receiver arrested on drunk driving charges

Most of the current press coverage concerning the National Football League (NFL) has to do with the lockout and the - increasing likely - chance that the players and owners will reach an agreement that saves the season. However, even with this dedicated lockout coverage, some NFL players are still managing to make national headlines - although perhaps not as they would have liked. For example, a star wide receiver and Super Bowl MVP was arrested for DUI this past weekend.

According to various sources, Hines Ward of the Pittsburgh Steelers was arrested for drunk driving early Saturday morning in Atlanta, Georgia, after failing a battery of field sobriety tests.

Police reports indicate that an officer became suspicious that Ward was driving under the influence and began following him at around 2 a.m. During this time, the officer observed Ward's Aston Martin make several lane changes without signaling and strike a curb.

Shortly thereafter, the officer pulled Ward over to the side of the highway.

After being pulled over, Ward, 35, reportedly exhibited certain signs of intoxication, including red eyes, a flush face and an odor of alcohol. At this time, he also informed police that he only had two drinks throughout the course of the evening.

Ward was then asked to perform a variety of field sobriety tests, including a balance test and alphabet test.

The police report indicates that he not only struggled to maintain his balance, but that he had troubled saying the alphabet. ("Next I asked him to recite the alphabet from D to X, which he mixed up letters and omitted letters," reads the report.)

Finally, Ward agreed to take an alcohol sensor test -not a breath test - and was placed under arrest.

He was subsequently released after posting a $1,000 bond.

While Ward has since come forward to apologize for the incident, he also maintains his innocence.

"From our preliminary investigation we can tell you that we are confident that the facts will show that Hines was not impaired by alcohol while driving," read a statement released through his agent. "However, Hines is deeply saddened by this incident and apologizes to his fans and the Steelers organization for this distraction."

Most people know Ward from his memorable performance in Super Bowl XL in 2006, as well as his recent stint on TV's "Dancing with the Stars."
