Distracted driving focus of Operation Hang Up

Drivers in New York City may lately feel under siege with the Vision Zero and related campaigns intended to reduce traffic fatalities. An increased number of slow zones, speed bumps and traffic cameras are routinely reported on as of late. Even jaywalkers are at an increased risk of being ticketed than before. However, it is not just in New York City that drivers must beware of being stopped for traffic violations.

A recent news story revealed a current five-day crackdown by New York State Police called Operation Hang Up. All around the state, troopers will be focusing their efforts on finding and ticketing distracted drivers. A similar effort was held in late 2013. Over the span of that event, a total of 875 tickets were issued. In addition to the fines that drivers may face, ranging from $50 to $150, as many as five penalty points can be added to a driver’s license for a distracted driving violation.

Operation Hang Up will run from April 10 to April 15. Younger drivers who are ticketed may even potentially lose their driving privileges for up to two four months, even on a first time offense. In the media article, the writer rode with a state trooper in a Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement, or CITE, vehicle. During the ride, the officer issued three tickets in only 17 minutes.

Insurance surcharges, license suspensions, high fines and more are serious penalties that can negatively impact a driver’s life. Any driver who receives a ticket for distracted driving may wish to talk with an attorney to understand his or her defense options.
