Drunk driving arrest of school safety officer

Throughout New York City, the level of vigilance over various traffic violations has definitely increased in the past year or so. This can be seen in a variety of ways and against many different types of offenses. Drunk driving is one of these things. While it is important to keep the public safe when on the road, whether as a motorist, passenger, pedestrian, bicyclist or motorcyclist, it is equally important to protect the rights of those accused of vehicular offenses.

Any New York resident who has been arrested on DWI charges can attest to the complex process involved during and after an arrest. It is also important to know that anyone can be subject to such an arrest. Recently an employee of the New York Police Department was charged with driving while intoxicated after being apprehended in Brooklyn. The 29-year old driver is a safety officer at a school but was not on duty at the time of his arrest.

According to reports, the man failed to stop at a red light at Marcy Avenue and Myrtle Avenue and also hit another vehicle. He was allegedly attempting to leave the scene of the accident. On open vodka container was located in the man’s vehicle. After being caught by officers, the driver would not submit to a breath test. It is not known if the driver is currently in custody or was released on bail. No details about the official charges were listed in the news story.

Any drunk driving arrest can put a driver at risk for serious penalties that may last several years. When this happens, talking to an attorney can be a good idea for defendants.
