Younger drivers statistically have a higher chance of being involved in an accident or some other unsafe driving activity. This is reflected in higher premiums for drivers under certain ages. The same logic applies to young male drivers versus their female counterparts and the numbers provide young men with much higher insurance rates as a result. Drivers of all ages have reason to be concerned about safety hazards on the road whether drunk driving, speeding or distracted driving.
A recent study of youth from 14 to 24 years old shows that it may be parents who may want to take note of their own behavior. When polled, 42 percent of respondents indicated that they have seen their parents engage in texting while driving. Another 37 percent said they have witnessed cell phone use or other known distracting behavior by parents behind the wheel.
When asked what they believe to be the biggest dangers on the road, the majority of people answering—69 percent, in fact—said that texting while driving was the number one most dangerous activity engaged in by drivers today. Drinking while driving and talking on the phone were other behaviors that the young drivers said they believed were unsafe.
Regardless of age, many drivers today are aware of the dangers of drinking and driving as well as texting and driving. Anyone involved in a car accident with a driver engaging in these or other activities may consider a consultation with an attorney to best ensure that they are protected.
