Sleeping man charged with DWI

Many times, the media calls attention to cases of people arrested with DUI or DWI charges and highlights any accidents, injuries or deaths that may have occurred and be related to the arrest. It can seem as though people arrested for driving while intoxicated are automatically convicted by the public with the high level of scrutiny in our society today.

Not all drivers arrested for or charged with a DWI or DUI have injured other parties or even caused accidents. One such case involving no reported injuries or accidents found a 25-year old New York City man asleep in the driver’s seat of his car while sitting in the drive-through lane of a McDonald’s restaurant on Route 1 in South Brunswick shortly after midnight.

Employees at the fast food restaurant noticed the minivan sitting in an idle position for a period of time and called the police. Upon arrival, the police noted that the van’s driver was slurring his words and had the smell of alcohol on his breath. They administered field sobriety tests which the main failed and then arrested his for careless driving reckless driving and driving while intoxicated. The man is current out of jail on a summons and awaiting a court date.

Incidents like these can leave accused people feeling helpless and as though the chance of fighting the DWI charge is hopeless. While it can be difficult, there are some types of assistance and it may always be a smart thing for someone arrested with a DWI to talk with an attorney. That may be the best way of obtaining good advice.
