NYC tackles speeding with 284 new speed bumps

New York City is undoubtedly sees some of the busiest roadways in the nation. That means the city also sees its share of accidents, speeding and other driving violations or problems. Depending upon the nature of the offense, drivers may be fined, have points added to their driving records, face license suspensions or more.

In response to statistics that indicate that nearly 30 percent of all traffic fatalities in New York City in 2012 were related to speeding, the Department of Transportation is increasing the number of speed bumps around the area. A total of 240 speed bumps were installed in 2012 and so far in the first nine months of 2013, 248 have been added. The Bronx and Brooklyn areas have received the highest number of new speed bumps with 73 and 72, respectively. Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan have also had several new bumps installed.

In addition to the traffic fatality rate relative to speeding, the New York Police Department issued roughly 71,000 speeding tickets last year. The mayor recently installed 20 traffic cameras near select schools in the city. The speed bumps are being installed in designated neighborhood slow zones with speed limits of 20 miles per hour as well as near schools.

Drivers throughout New York should take note of the new speed bumps and increased oversight by law enforcement on speeding. If you do receive a ticket for speeding, however, you may wish to get a legal consultation as the circumstances may not always be so black and white and you may benefit from proper help.
