New York City embarks upon Vision Zero plan

As the New Year gets off to a full start, people in and around New York City continue to be aware of the need for safety on NYC streets for both motorists and pedestrians alike. In 2013, many new initiatives were instituted to increase the focus on reducing accidents or strengthening penalties for people who violate traffic laws by speeding or other actions.

The mayor of New York has devised what is called Vision Zero that will be implemented city wide. The vision is a plan to eliminate all vehicular deaths in New York City by the year 2024. One component of the plan is the development of a task force. This consolidated group is charged with creating actions that will work to achieve this stated goal. Members of the task force include representatives from the Department of Health, the Department of Transportation, the New York Police Department and the Taxi and Limousine Commission.

In addition to the new task force, several traffic cameras have been installed at various places around the city, all within a quarter mile distance of schools. Up to this point, the cameras issued only warnings to those people found breaking the law but now will begin to issue actual citations. Fines for exceeding the speed limit by 10 miles per hour will be $50 per instance.

People who receive multiple such vehicle citations may face license suspensions, license revocations and more. To get help with such situations, working with a traffic attorney is one potential solution to points, jail sentences, fines and more.
