New law facilitates traffic plea bargains in Buffalo

Traffic tickets can be highly expensive propositions for drivers in New York. Not only do traffic violations result in fines that must be paid but they can also raise insurance premiums for drivers. This happens when points are added to drivers’ records and insurance companies see those points. A successful traffic ticket defense can feel out of reach for some drivers yet it is the only way to prevent these consequences.

Drivers who receive tickets in the city of Buffalo will be getting help soon with the ability to fight a traffic ticket. A new law is awaiting the signature of the Governor after passing both the New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate. The bill provides facilitated plea bargaining for some traffic violations. More serious offenses may be able to be reduced to violations related to parking, seat belts or other topics.

Currently, most of the revenue from many traffic tickets goes to the state so that local municipalities do not receive much of it. With the plea bargains, however, the city of Buffalo could generate as much as $3 million of additional income every year because the fines from the lower violations do go directly to the city. This makes local officials pleased with the new law. Drivers can benefit from it because violations will no longer be on their records so insurance premiums will not be as risk for increasing.

Anyone who is interested in fighting a traffic ticket may wish to talk with a traffic law attorney. Even if tickets are issues in cities that do not make plea bargains easy, options do exist.
