Driver in fatal crash charged with failure to yield

Most people in New York City are aware that the mayor enacted the Vision Zero program in 2014. In general, the program is aimed at reducing traffic-related deaths in the city. However, the program has made what were previously minor traffic law violations serious offenses for drivers. As such, motorists could face harsher penalties for convictions of New York traffic law offenses.

According to reports, a woman was charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian who had the right of way recently. Under the Vision Zero program, she faces a misdemeanor charge because the pedestrian died as a result of her injuries. It was not reported what penalties the driver could face if convicted of the traffic violation, nor was it indicated if she may also be charged with other offenses.

The 37-year-old driver reportedly was making a left turn when she struck an 80-year-old woman who was in the crosswalk. News reports did not indicate any factors that may have contributed to the fatal collision. Law enforcement watched surveillance video of the accident, and determined that the pedestrian had the right of way at the time.

Under the Vision Zero program, even a minor traffic ticket could have severe repercussions and a lasting impact. As such, people who have been charged with violating New York traffic law may benefit from seeking legal counsel and representation. An attorney may help them understand their rights, as well as their options for defending themselves against the charges they are facing.
