Speeding Ticket Attorney in New Jersey
A Former Traffic Court Judge Defending New Jersey Drivers
If you’re challenging a speeding ticket in New Jersey, the experience behind your defense matters. Attorney Martin A. Kron is a former New York State Traffic Court Judge who presided over thousands of trials involving traffic laws and regulations. At Martin A. Kron & Associates, P.C., we have handled more than 100,000 traffic cases across New York and New Jersey.
A speeding citation can carry consequences beyond the amount printed on the ticket. We assess the alleged speed, the driver’s record, New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) points, possible surcharges, and license concerns before discussing the available response options.

New Jersey Speeding Ticket Points, Fines & Surcharges
New Jersey treats fines, MVC points, surcharges, license action, and insurance effects as separate but related consequences. The penalties depend in part on how far the alleged speed exceeded the posted limit.
Under N.J.S.A. 39:4-98, point assessments generally follow three speeding tiers:
- 1 to 14 MPH over the limit: 2 points and fines of about $86 to $96.
- 15 to 29 MPH over the limit: 4 points and fines ranging from $106 to $221.
- 30 MPH or more over the limit: 5 points.
Point Violation Surcharge
A Point Violation Surcharge is an additional MVC charge tied to accumulated points. When a driver accumulates six or more points within three years of the last posted violation, the surcharge is generally $150 plus $25 for each point above six. It may be assessed annually for three years.
Surcharge timing is based on the date the conviction posts to the driving record, not the date the citation was issued. This distinction can matter when several violations or convictions fall within the same period.
Driving Record & License Suspension
Points remain on a New Jersey driving record indefinitely. For suspension calculations, however, the active point count is generally reduced by three points for each year without a violation or suspension. That reduction doesn’t erase the underlying entries.
Accumulating 12 or more points can result in a license suspension. Excessive speeding or multiple violations can also place driving privileges at risk, depending on the circumstances.
Insurance Pricing
Insurance companies use underwriting and rating systems that are separate from the MVC point system. A particular point assessment doesn’t automatically predict an insurer’s response. The insurer’s rules, the driving history, and the conviction itself can affect pricing.
Defending a Speeding Charge in New Jersey
Our representation begins with an evaluation of the citation and the available options. We review the alleged violation, prior violations, evidence, license type, and court procedures before the driver decides how to respond. Our guidance is tailored to the circumstances of each ticket.
We defend clients in New Jersey traffic court and conduct plea negotiations when appropriate. Depending on the allegation, evidence, record, court procedures, and prosecutorial discretion, a case may involve a negotiated disposition, reduced penalty, or dismissal. We don’t promise a particular result.
We also represent clients in license suspension hearings. Our clients receive direct attorney access, responsive communication, and one-on-one attention throughout the case.

"So personable and nice."When I called the Firm I was very hesitant in even hiring an attorney but after speaking with the attorney I felt very comfortable in my decision in hiring an attorney. I had a reckless driving summons in NY and the attorney Lindsay Kron met me at court. She was so personable and nice. She was able to have my summons reduced to a no point no criminal violation with a minimal fine. This Firm is amazing and did a great job. I would definitely recommend them in the future.Rachel
