Stop Sign Ticket Lawyer in New York
Defense Grounded in How Traffic Courts Actually Work
A stop sign ticket in New York carries 3 points on your driving record, fines, and consequences that compound quickly if you have prior violations. Many drivers pay without a second thought, not realizing that paying is a guilty plea that locks in every one of those consequences. Martin A. Kron & Associates, P.C. is led by Martin A. Kron, a former New York State Traffic Court Judge who presided over thousands of cases under New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law. That background gives our firm a direct, court-side understanding of how TVB administrators and prosecutors evaluate these cases.
We’ve handled over 100,000 traffic cases across New York and New Jersey over more than 40 years of focused practice. Free consultations are available by phone, and in most cases our attorneys can appear on your behalf so you don’t need to take time off work to attend a hearing.
Don’t pay a stop sign ticket before understanding what you’re giving up. Call us for a free phone consultation at (212) 235-1525 and we can walk you through your options.
What a VTL 1172(a) Conviction Actually Costs You
A New York stop sign violation is charged under VTL 1172(a). In New York City, the fine is $138. Outside the city, the fine is set by the judge up to $150, plus a mandatory $93 surcharge. A second offense within 18 months can reach $300; a third within that same window can reach $450.
The point consequences extend further. Accumulating 6 or more points within any 18-month period triggers the Driver Responsibility Assessment, an additional fee paid directly to the NY DMV on top of any court fine. At 6 points, the minimum assessment is $300. Reach 11 or more points within any 18-month period and the DMV can suspend your license.
Insurance companies treat stop sign convictions as moving violations, and a conviction can affect your premium calculations for up to 3 years. One detail worth knowing: a rolling stop and a complete failure to stop are treated identically under VTL 1172(a). Same points, same fine, same record impact.
Why Contesting a Stop Sign Ticket Is Worth Considering
Paying a stop sign ticket results in the conviction and every consequence attached to it. Contesting preserves the possibility of dismissal, a reduction to a non-point violation, or a lesser charge, depending on the facts of your case.
Stop sign violations are among the more subjective moving violations. Whether a full stop occurred often comes down to the officer’s line of sight, intersection geometry, signage visibility, and stop line condition. These are exactly the kinds of factual variables an attorney can examine and, where appropriate, challenge. Because Martin A. Kron evaluated stop sign cases from the bench, we know what arguments carry weight with TVB administrators and what the record needs to show to support a defense.
Every client gets direct, one-on-one attention and honest advice about what the facts of their case realistically support. We don’t oversell outcomes. We tell you what we see and what we can pursue.
Defense Approaches for New York Stop Sign Tickets
The right defense depends on the specific circumstances of your stop. Depending on what the evidence shows, our attorneys may pursue one or more of the following:
- Officer vantage point: Challenging whether the citing officer had a clear, unobstructed line of sight at the moment the alleged violation occurred
- Sign obstruction: Arguing that the stop sign was blocked by trees, foliage, or other obstacles that affected its visibility
- Stop line condition: Examining whether the stop line was faded or unclear in a way that affected where you were required to stop
- Dash cam footage: Presenting video evidence that supports a complete stop having been made
- Witness accounts and intersection conditions: Building a factual record from available evidence beyond the officer’s observation alone
- Charge reduction: Where dismissal isn’t achievable, negotiating for a reduction to a lesser or non-point charge in courts where that option exists
No outcome can be guaranteed. What we can say is that your case gets a genuine strategic review by attorneys who understand how these proceedings work from the inside.

"BEST DEAL IN NYC!!!"Had tons of old traffic tickets in NYC. Mr. Kron got them reopened and thrown out. I got emails all the time telling what was going on but I never had to appear.Jack

"I received invaluable advice on my case."I received a ticket for driving with an expired license and thought I'd go to court myself without consulting an attorney. However, last minute, a friend recommended Mr. Kron. Without much notice, I received invaluable advice on my case which spanned both NY and NJ traffic laws. Instead of having my license suspended, I received a minimal fine. I would highly recommend Mr. Kron He is extremely knowledgeable and professional and I'm very grateful I did not go at it alone.Talia

"Martin is the perfect person for this job."
As a former NYS Traffic Law Judge and having previously sat where the Judges before him now sit, Martin is the perfect person for this job. Besides a plethora of experience on and off the bench, he's kind and honest, he listens and is attentive to your concerns, is straightforward and most importantly, gives out reasonable expectations. He always returns phone calls in a timely manner and makes himself accessible even on weekends. And to top it off, he even has a sense of humor. Hope I never have to hire him again, but if the situation arises, he's my go-to guy!
