New York Point System Former Traffic Court Judge Fighting For You

Points System in New York

Don't Pay Fines that Automatically Put Points on Your Record

New York uses a points system where certain traffic violations are given a point value. When you accumulate a certain number of points, the Department of Motor Vehicles or the Motor Vehicle Commission can and will suspend or revoke your driver's license. While it may seem easier to just pay your ticket and move on, doing so means pleading guilty to a traffic offense, and points will be added automatically. Let the New York traffic ticket lawyer at Martin A. Kron & Associates, P.C. help.

Let Martin A. Kron & Associates, P.C. help you fight your ticket and keep points off your record. Call us at (212) 235-1525 or reach out to us online.

Too Many Points Can Result in License Suspension & Additional Fines

How many points does it take for a license suspension? That depends on the type of traffic violation and the number of offenses you are convicted of in a certain period of time.

In New York, once you get six points on your record, you are subject to additional fines for tickets in the future. If you accumulate 11 or more points, or if you receive three speeding tickets in an 18-month period, your license may be revoked for a minimum of six months.

Listed below are some of the most common or serious offenses, and the points associated with each. Remember that points are not the only penalty for many of these violations. Some alone could result in license suspension and criminal sanctions.

In New York, the point values for infractions are:

  • DUI and Other Drug-Related Offenses - 11
  • Aggravated Unlicensed Operation - 11
  • Reckless Driving - 11
  • Passing a Stopped School Bus - 8
  • Speeding in a Construction Zone - 8, regardless of speed
  • Striking a Bridge with a Truck That Is Too Tall (Over-height Vehicle) - 8
  • Using a Cell Phone while Driving - 6
  • Failure to Use Due Care - 5
  • Racing or Other Speed Contests - 5
  • Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Crash - 5
  • Failure to Yield to Pedestrian - 5
  • Speeding (1-10 mph over limit) - 4
  • Equipment Violations (e.g. broken tail light) - 1

    "Both tickets dismissed!"
I received two cell phone tickets in the past year because I was using the GPS on my cell phone. Mr. Kron was able to get both tickets dismissed and put me at ease along the way.

    "Mr. Kron is wonderful!"
Mr. Martin A. Kron is a knowledgeable, professional, effective and caring Attorney. And finding this combination is very rare. He treats you like a client, but he also treats you like family. I have gotten speeding tickets in the past and handled them myself. But this was a DWI Ticket (and a careless driving ticket) and I was petrified. I found Mr. Martin Kron, and he was wonderful. He believed what I had to say, he walked me through the process, and he even gave me his cell number and home email so that I could contact him any time I felt scared or confused. The first court date was just to enter the plea. Mr. Kron spoke with the Prosecutor prior to the second court appearance and we were hoping that based on the evidence, the Prosecutor would dismiss the tickets. No such luck. I think the Prosecutor wanted another "win" in his column, and I was going to be it. Mr. Kron presented our case and the Prosecutor presented why he had grounds to proceed to trial. But Mr. Kron professionally stood his ground and the 2 tickets were dismissed that day! I couldn't more highly recommend an attorney! Mr. Kron is wonderful!

    "SAVED MY LICENSE"
My lawyer helped save my license from a suspension. If I can't drive I can't work or feed my family. They were always on top of my case and helped me continue to drive for a living. I spoke with all three partners and each one knew about my case and helped each step of the way. Vanessa the manager was so helpful and didn't mind that I called every day.

Had tons of old traffic tickets in NYC. Mr. Kron got them reopened and thrown out. I got emails all the time telling what was going on but I never had to appear.
