Double Trouble: Driver Gets Two Speeding Tickets at Once

It's bad enough to get one speeding ticket. Getting two speeding tickets at the same time is much worse -- and not something that anyone expects to happen. It did happen recently, though, to a retired couple driving on a Georgia road.

The driver informed a local news station that she was astonished when a patrol car pulled her over, as she hasn't gotten a speeding ticket in 30 years. However, by the time she pulled over to the side of the road, there were two police cars behind her.

According to the driver, the first police officer allegedly got out of his patrol car and issued her a speeding ticket for driving 56 miles-per-hour in a 35 mile-per-hour zone. Then he allegedly told her, "Oh, no. You're not going anywhere yet. This policeman behind me wants to give you another ticket."

The second police officer then issued her a ticket for going 62 miles-per-hour in the 35 mile-per-hour zone, telling her that he was issuing the second speeding ticket to make an example out of her.

"And it was on the same exact minute of the same exact day. Then I just went into total shock. I was so upset. I couldn't even cry," she said.

The driver is arguing that she should not have gotten two tickets since both were issued for essentially the same incident. The local police chief, however, is disputing this, saying that the two police officers were on opposite ends of the road and that her car had sped up by the time it got into the second officer's radar range.

Meanwhile, the couple is naturally very upset. They have two court dates in October and are afraid they may have to pay as much as $1,000 for the tickets.

If you or a loved one has received a speeding ticket or traffic citation, don't just dismiss it. Instead, consider contacting an attorney who understands New York's confusing legal system, and who can help you evaluate your options and make the right decisions.
